Concrete Slab Moisture Testing Before Coating Selection
Moisture testing helps you assess a concrete slab before choosing a coating system. Moisture moving through concrete can contribute to coating adhesion problems, blistering, delamination or efflorescence. A test is a planning input, not a guarantee that a coating will perform.
Test before selecting a system
ASTM F2170 describes measuring relative humidity within concrete floor slabs using in-situ probes. Have testing performed and documented in accordance with the current standard. Record the test locations and results, then compare them with the moisture limits and substrate requirements in the technical data for the proposed coating system. Conditions may change between testing and installation.
If results exceed a product's stated requirements, or the slab's history or conditions are uncertain, consult the coating or finish-system manufacturer before selecting preparation or mitigation. A moisture treatment is not a substitute for confirming compatibility with the complete system.
Products to discuss with the manufacturer
RhinoCoat MB Moisture Block Epoxy - 2 Gallon Kit is described as a moisture-mitigation epoxy for concrete substrates before resinous flooring systems. Confirm its current technical data and suitability for your slab and finish system.
Multicoat Vapor Shield is a penetrating treatment for bare concrete intended to help reduce moisture-vapor transmission before compatible overlays or coatings. Review its technical data sheet and confirm finish-system compatibility and moisture requirements with the manufacturer.
Neither a test reading nor a mitigation product alone guarantees a successful installation. Plan testing early enough to allow for product selection, any manufacturer-recommended mitigation and installation scheduling.
